Checkpoint Charlie

Checkpoint Charlie was the best known Berlin border crossing when Berlin was divided. It was on Friedrichstrasse between the US-American sector and the Soviet sector. The checkpoint attained special fame when on October27th, 1961 Soviet and American tanks with loaded ammunition faced each other in a threatening manner. Today there is a exact copy of the checkpoint, which was reestablished in 2000 in the old location and, in the meantime, has become one of the main tourist attractions of Berlin. A wall museum which describes the history of the wall and the internal border in a detailed way and also reports about successful escapes has been opened right next to the former border crossing. One of the most spectacular escapes was a journey across the GDR border to Bavaria in a self-made hot-air balloon.

Information about the wall museumcan be found under www.mauermuseum.de.
