Leipzig square - Berlin Wall

Between 1961 and 1989, the Berlin Wall ran through the middle of Leipzig square and the adjoining Potsdam square (in the background). It was implemented as a double wall and the space in between was known as the death stripe. Before the 2nd world war this place belonged to the most animated places of Berlin. The area was razed to the ground during the war. It belonged to the especially hopeless areas of the city. Even if today Leipzig square is covered with buildings again, the the area in the midst of the city is still relatively quiet. The course of the wall has been made visible with paving-stones on the lawn and the street and some original wall segments were put up again.
