The Reichstag building on Republic square has a busy past. Its planning and construction took a long time. The actual construction period of the building lasted from 1871 to 1894. After the Reichstag fire of 1933 and the damage done during the 2nd world war, the building was completely refurbished twice (1961 - 1973 and 1991 - 1999). Today the Reichstag building is the seat of the German Parliament (Bundestag). The dome on top of it with its sophisticated shape belongs to the most-visited attractions of Berlin. It sits above the hall where the legislature meets and can be visited free of charge daily from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., as can the roof terrace and the roof cafe. The picture on the left shows a part of the Bundestag and the Berlin television tower further back in the picture.
